Did You Know...
The 24 bones of your spine have discs between each pair that act as your body's "shock absorbers". These allow you to tilt, rotate, and move in all directions.
The inner layer of each disc is made up of mostly water, which helps it cushion the spine somewhat like a waterbed. And if you're old enough to remember when waterbeds were everywhere, your discs could likely use some attention.
As we "level up", our discs tend to gradually lose fluid. And similar to a waterbed, less water means less cushion. When was your last adjustment?
Why It Matters
This process can cause your spine to shorten and stiffen. Keeping your discs healthy is one of the best things you can do to reduce your risk of living with neck and back pain, especially if your day is heavy on computer or desk time.
Next Steps
The good news? There's good news! Movement is how your discs draw in nutrients, so keeping them healthy is often just a matter of being proactive.
If you sit for long periods, try to change positions every 15 minutes. If you work at a computer for hours at a time, consider bringing in a standing desk. Do whatever you can to squeeze more movement into your day. Your body will thank you!
